Key Takeaways
✓Canadian clinics typically charge about CAD 4–8 (€2.55–€5.10) per graft, so 2,000–3,000 grafts usually cost CAD 8,000–18,000 (€5,100–€11,470), plus sales tax in most provinces.
✓My Diamond package in Istanbul is a fixed CAD 9,080 (€5,790), whatever the graft count, with hotel, transfers, PRP and exosome treatment included. With flights, a trip from Canada usually totals about CAD 10,280–11,430 (€6,550–€7,290).
✓For small sessions or a lower-priced Canadian clinic, staying at home can cost about the same. The difference grows with the number of grafts.
✓Canadians need no visa for Türkiye for visits of up to 90 days. Nonstop flights take about 10 hours from Toronto and Montreal and about 12 from Vancouver, and most patients stay four days.
✓Provincial health plans, travel insurance and the medical expense tax credit do not cover a cosmetic hair transplant, in Canada or abroad. Plan aftercare and complications before you fly.
Canadian patients usually reach me with a quote from a clinic in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal or Calgary, and a question: can a hair transplant in Istanbul really cost so much less, and is it worth a ten-hour flight? The honest answer depends on your graft count, your health, and above all on who will actually perform your surgery.
As a hair transplant surgeon who operates on patients from North America in Istanbul, I see both sides of this decision: the plans patients bring from Canadian clinics and the results they achieve here. On this page I compare Canada and Turkey on cost, sales tax, the real total cost of the trip, who performs the surgery, regulation, how to check a clinic, provincial health plans and insurance, travel, and aftercare once you are home. I also answer what Canadian clinics say about Turkey, and explain when I tell Canadians to stay at home. For the full guide to surgery here, see my hair transplant in Turkey page; I also compare Turkey with the USA and the UK.

Hair Transplant Cost: Canada vs Turkey
In Canada, hair transplants are usually priced per graft. Prices published by Canadian clinics in 2025 and 2026 put FUE at about CAD 4–8 (€2.55–€5.10) per graft, with strip surgery (FUT) lower, and a session of 2,000–3,000 grafts at about CAD 8,000–18,000 (€5,100–€11,470). Prices differ by city:
TorontoAbout CAD 4–6 per graft
VancouverAbout CAD 5–7 per graft
MontrealAbout CAD 3.50–7 per graft, plus 14.975% GST and QST
Calgary and EdmontonAbout CAD 2.50–8 per graft
Market ranges published by Canadian clinics, 2025–2026. Individual clinics may charge more or less.
Do not forget sales tax
Cosmetic procedures in Canada are generally subject to sales tax. In Ontario that adds 13% HST, so a CAD 12,000 quote becomes CAD 13,560; in Quebec, GST and QST add 14.975%. Always ask whether a Canadian quote includes tax.
How Turkey compares
In Turkey, most clinics sell all-inclusive packages of about CAD 3,140–7,840 (€2,000–€5,000) with hotel and transfers. My Diamond package is a fixed CAD 9,080 (€5,790), whatever the number of grafts and whatever technique your hair needs:
1,500 graftsCanada at CAD 4–8 per graftCAD 6,000–12,000 (€3,820–€7,650)Diamond package, with meCAD 9,080 (€5,790)
2,500 graftsCanada at CAD 4–8 per graftCAD 10,000–20,000 (€6,370–€12,750)Diamond package, with meCAD 9,080 (€5,790)
3,500 graftsCanada at CAD 4–8 per graftCAD 14,000–28,000 (€8,920–€17,850)Diamond package, with meCAD 9,080 (€5,790)
4,500 graftsCanada at CAD 4–8 per graftCAD 18,000–36,000 (€11,470–€22,950)Diamond package, with meCAD 9,080 (€5,790)
Canadian figures before sales tax. Many clinics discount large sessions, so real quotes for 3,500 grafts or more are often lower.
The table shows the honest picture. At around 1,500–2,000 grafts, a lower-priced Canadian clinic can cost about the same as travelling to me, once you add flights. From about 2,500 grafts, or against Toronto and Vancouver prices, the difference grows quickly. You can see how graft numbers are planned on my graft cost page and current Turkish prices on my hair transplant cost in Turkey page. Smile Hair Clinic also offers lower-priced packages from about CAD 3,750 (€2,390), planned by other doctors on the team; all are compared on my hair transplant Turkey packages page.
Why is a hair transplant cheaper in Turkey?
Lower salaries, rents and operating costs, a favourable exchange rate and strong competition between clinics. The operation itself is the same. What should make you cautious is not a Turkish price below a Canadian price, but a Turkish price far below other reputable Turkish clinics. That usually means something has been removed, most often the surgeon’s own time.
The Real Total Cost of a Hair Transplant Trip from Canada
Canadian clinics are right that the Turkish price is not the whole cost. This is a realistic budget for a trip to Istanbul with me:
Diamond packageTypical costCAD 9,080 (€5,790)What it coversProcedure, 3 nights in a 5-star hotel, VIP transfers, blood tests, PRP, exosome treatment, medication, 3-month hair care kit, 12 months of follow-up

Meals and extrasTypical costCAD 200–550 (€130–€350)What it coversFood, phone data, small purchases
Extra nights (optional)Typical costFrom about CAD 100 (€60) a nightWhat it coversIf you want to see Istanbul before surgery
Time off workTypical cost3–5 working daysWhat it covers4 days in Istanbul; most office workers return within a week
Typical total from CanadaA typical total of about CAD 10,280–11,430 (€6,550–€7,290). For comparison, 3,000 grafts in Toronto at CAD 4–6 per graft cost CAD 12,000–18,000, or CAD 13,560–20,340 with HST.
What no budget includes is a revision. Ask every clinic, in Canada and in Turkey, in writing: what happens if the result is not what was planned, and what does it cost?
Who Performs Your Surgery: The Question That Matters Most
The strongest argument Canadian clinics make against Turkey is that technicians do the surgery while the doctor hardly appears. In some Istanbul clinics that is true. But it is a clinic problem, not a country problem, and in Canada, too, technicians often extract and place grafts. The international society of hair restoration surgeons, ISHRS, recommends that diagnosis, planning and the surgery itself, including harvesting, hairline design and making the recipient sites, are carried out only by licensed physicians or properly licensed staff. Ask any clinic who does what:

Regulation in Canada and Turkey
Both countries regulate hair transplants, in different ways. Neither system guarantees a good result; both give you things to check.
CanadaPhysicians are licensed and disciplined by provincial colleges, such as the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). In Ontario, the CPSO also inspects out-of-hospital premises where certain cosmetic surgical procedures are performed. Hair transplants are not regulated as a separate specialty, and rules differ by province.
Turkey: hair transplant unitsSince 6 May 2023, a dedicated Ministry of Health regulation allows hair transplants only in licensed health institutions with a hair transplant unit. Channels may be opened only by doctors: plastic surgeons, dermatologists, or doctors certified in hair transplantation or medical aesthetics. Extraction and placement may be done by certified health staff under a doctor’s supervision, and one doctor may supervise no more than five operating rooms.
Turkey: health tourismUnder a 2025 regulation, facilities treating international patients need a health tourism authorisation certificate from the Ministry of Health, and complication insurance is compulsory for surgical procedures performed in an operating room. Approved providers are listed on the Ministry’s HealthTürkiye platform.
The Government of Canada’s travel advice for Türkiye notes that Canadian travellers have had serious complications after surgery abroad, and advises checking that your provider is authorised by the Turkish Ministry of Health and getting a written agreement. I explain how I meet these rules on my hair transplant in Turkey page.
How to Check a Clinic from Canada
ISHRS runs a campaign called “Fight the FIGHT” against fraudulent, illicit and global hair transplants. In its 2025 Practice Census, 59.4% of member surgeons worldwide said black-market clinics operate in their own city. Istanbul has more clinics of both kinds than anywhere, so verification matters:
- Know your surgeon’s name, specialty and medical school before you book, and speak to them, not only to a coordinator.
- Check the clinic is a licensed health institution with a hair transplant unit and a health tourism authorisation, and look for it on HealthTürkiye.
- Ask who opens the channels, who extracts and who places the grafts, and get the answer in writing.
- Ask for healed 12-month results from the same surgeon.
- Get the full price, follow-up plan and revision policy in a written agreement.
- Be wary of graft numbers promised before anyone has seen your donor area, very large sessions sold as a selling point, and prices far below other reputable clinics.
The techniques are the same in both countries: FUE with sapphire blades or DHI implanters in most Turkish clinics, and FUE or strip surgery (FUT) in Canada. My hair transplant techniques page compares every method, my hair transplant treatments page covers beard, eyebrow, female and Afro procedures, and my hair transplant guide explains candidacy, recovery and risks.
Provincial Health Plans, Insurance and Tax
Provincial health plansOHIP, RAMQ, Alberta’s AHCIP and BC’s MSP do not cover cosmetic surgery, so a hair transplant is self-paid whether you have it in Canada or abroad.
Out-of-country coverProvincial plans pay only limited amounts for emergencies abroad. OHIP, for example, pays up to CAD 400 a day for emergency inpatient care and up to CAD 50 a day for emergency outpatient care, and nothing for planned treatment without prior approval.
ComplicationsThe Government of Canada warns that your provincial plan may not cover your expenses if you develop complications after treatment abroad.
Travel insuranceMost travel insurance policies do not cover planned medical procedures in another country. Look for specialist cover and read the exclusions.
TaxSince 2010, purely cosmetic procedures are not eligible for the medical expense tax credit, unless they are needed for medical or reconstructive reasons.
Complication insuranceIn Turkey, complication insurance is compulsory for surgical procedures in an operating room. Ask your clinic what it covers and get it in writing.
Travelling from Canada for a Hair Transplant
Do Canadians need a visa for Türkiye?
No. Canadian citizens can visit Türkiye without a tourist visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. According to the Government of Canada, your passport should be valid for at least 150 days from the date you enter. Check travel.gc.ca before booking, as rules can change.
How long is the flight?
TorontoAbout 10–11 hours nonstop, with Turkish Airlines daily and seasonal Air Transat flights
MontrealAbout 10.5 hours nonstop, with Turkish Airlines and Air Transat
VancouverAbout 12 hours nonstop with Turkish Airlines
Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and othersOne stop, usually via Toronto, Montreal or a European hub
Time differenceIstanbul is 7–8 hours ahead of Toronto and Montreal, and 10–11 hours ahead of Vancouver
Schedules change by season; check before booking.
Is Istanbul safe to visit?
The Government of Canada asks travellers to exercise a high degree of caution in Türkiye, mainly because of the risk of terrorism and demonstrations, and to avoid areas close to the Syrian and Iraqi borders, far from Istanbul. Millions of tourists visit Istanbul every year; follow the current travel.gc.ca advice when you book.
A typical four-day trip
Day 1Arrive in Istanbul, airport transfer, hotel check-in and rest.
Day 2Blood tests, consultation and hairline design, then the operation. Back to the hotel in the evening.
Day 3Check-up and bandage change.
Day 4First wash at the clinic, aftercare briefing, then the flight home.
Flying home after surgery
The Government of Canada notes that flying soon after surgery can increase the risk of blood clots. On a 10–12 hour flight, drink water, walk the aisle every one to two hours, avoid alcohol, use a U-shaped pillow so your head does not rest on the donor area, and wear a loose cap. If you have ever had a blood clot, tell me before you book.
Aftercare When You Are Back in Canada
This is what Canadian clinics worry about most, and they are right that it must be planned. This is how follow-up works with my team:
Before you leaveWritten aftercare instructions, your operation notes in English and direct contact details for the team.
First weeksYou send photos at set points; we answer questions about washing, scabs and shedding. We schedule video calls around the time difference.
Months 1–12Photo reviews and video calls as your hair grows. Supportive treatments such as PRP or exosomes can be arranged with a Canadian clinic if you wish.
If something is wrongContact us the same day with photos. For signs of infection, such as fever, spreading redness or discharge, also see your family doctor or a walk-in clinic the same day.
The Government of Canada advises telling any health care provider you see, for at least 12 months after you return, that you had a procedure abroad. Take your operation notes with you. The full daily routine is in my patient guide.
What Canadian Clinics Say About Turkey, and My Answer
“Technicians do the surgery in Turkey.”In some clinics, yes, which is why you must ask who performs each step. Turkish law reserves channel opening for doctors. With me, I design the hairline, open the channels and place every graft.
“Turkish clinics are unregulated.”Turkey has had a dedicated hair transplant regulation since 2023 and a health tourism licence system. Black-market clinics exist, in Turkey and elsewhere, so check the licence, the surgeon and the HealthTürkiye listing.
“There is no follow-up once you fly home.”Follow-up from abroad is harder than a drive to a local clinic. It has to be planned, with photo reviews, video calls and your family doctor. My team follows patients for 12 months.
“Turkish clinics transplant too many grafts.”Some do, and overharvesting the donor area is a real risk. Your graft number should come from your donor area and future hair loss, not from a package.
“The flight and the trip add cost.”True: about four days and CAD 1,200–2,350 in flights and extras. For larger sessions that is usually far less than the price difference; for small ones it may not be.
In this short video I explain why price alone is the wrong reason to choose Turkey.
Video: Dr. Gökay Bilgin on choosing a clinic in Turkey.
When Staying in Canada Makes More Sense
I turn patients away, and I tell some Canadians that a local clinic is the better choice:
- A small session of around 1,000–2,000 grafts with a reasonably priced Canadian clinic, where the saving disappears once travel is included.
- A history of blood clots, or a condition that makes a 10–12 hour flight risky.
- Uncontrolled diabetes, blood pressure or heart disease, or blood thinners that cannot safely be paused.
- If you need, or strongly prefer, in-person follow-up close to home.
- Hair loss that has only just started, where medical treatment should come first.
For these patients, a good procedure at home is the right choice.
What the Research Shows
Canadian study · 12 patients · 2022The cost of complications falls on CanadaA study from Calgary in the Journal of the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada (Robinson and colleagues, 2022) followed 12 patients treated for infections after medical procedures abroad. Treatment lasted 19 weeks on average and cost CAD 6,288–20,741 per patient. What it means: Infection control and aftercare matter as much as the price.
Review · 2025Hair transplant tourism has allure and alarmsA review in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (Haider and colleagues, 2025) found that Turkey’s industry can offer effective results and high graft survival in some centres, but described unsupervised technicians, bait-and-switch practices and a lack of consistent reporting. What it means: Price differences can reflect real differences in surgeon, team and safety.
National database · 198 cases · 2026Aftercare and early flightsA study in Aesthetic Surgery Journal (Goodarzi and colleagues, 2026) analysed complications of cosmetic surgery abroad reported by UK plastic surgeons. Most were abdominal and breast operations, and poor aftercare and premature air travel were recurring factors. What it means: Plan aftercare and the flight home as carefully as the operation.
Practice census · 2025Black-market clinics are a global problemIn the ISHRS 2025 Practice Census, 59.4% of member surgeons reported black-market clinics in their city, and repairs of such work made up about 10% of their cases. What it means: Verify any clinic, wherever it is.
My View: Canada or Turkey?
My viewI operate on patients from Canada and the US regularly, and I respect many Canadian hair surgeons. The best clinics in both countries do the same work to the same standard. What Istanbul offers is experience: surgeons here perform more procedures in a year than many surgeons elsewhere do in several, and that shows in design, speed and graft handling. What Canada offers is proximity: in-person follow-up and the protection of your provincial college. My advice is to choose a surgeon, not a country. Ask who opens the channels and who places the grafts, compare quotes including tax and travel, and get every answer in writing. If the answer is a surgeon you have researched, in a licensed clinic, with a written follow-up plan, Istanbul is an excellent choice. If not, it is not, in any country.
Frequently Asked Questions: Hair Transplant Canada vs Turkey
Is it better to get a hair transplant in Canada or Turkey?
It depends on the surgeon more than the country. A doctor-led clinic in Istanbul usually offers more experience for the money, including hotel and follow-up. A Canadian clinic offers in-person aftercare and local legal protection.
How much is a hair transplant in Canada vs Turkey?
In Canada, about CAD 4–8 per graft for FUE, or CAD 8,000–18,000 for 2,000–3,000 grafts, plus sales tax. In Turkey, packages typically cost CAD 3,140–7,840 (€2,000–€5,000); my Diamond package is a fixed CAD 9,080 (€5,790), all-inclusive.
How much does the whole trip from Canada cost?
With my Diamond package, flights and extras, typically about CAD 10,280–11,430 (€6,550–€7,290) in total.
Is there tax on a hair transplant in Canada?
Cosmetic procedures are generally subject to sales tax, for example 13% HST in Ontario and 14.975% GST and QST in Quebec. Ask whether your quote includes it.
Does OHIP or my provincial plan cover a hair transplant?
No. Provincial health plans do not cover cosmetic surgery, in Canada or abroad, and may not cover complications of treatment abroad.
Can I claim a hair transplant as a medical expense on my taxes?
Generally no. Since 2010, purely cosmetic procedures are not eligible for the medical expense tax credit unless they are medically or reconstructively necessary.
Do Canadians need a visa for Turkey?
No. Canadian citizens can visit Türkiye for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a tourist visa. Your passport should be valid for at least 150 days from entry.
How long is the flight from Canada to Istanbul?
About 10–11 hours nonstop from Toronto, about 10.5 from Montreal and about 12 from Vancouver.
How long do I need to stay in Turkey?
Most patients stay four days and three nights: arrival, operation, check-up and first wash before flying home.
Is it safe to fly home after a hair transplant?
Usually yes, after the first wash. Drink water, walk the aisle, avoid alcohol and protect the grafts. Tell me first if you have a history of blood clots.
Are the results in Turkey as good as in Canada?
They can be, and with an experienced surgeon often are. Results depend on the surgeon, the design and the care taken with grafts, not on the country.
Who performs the surgery at your clinic?
I do the consultation, design the hairline, open the channels and place every graft myself. My trained team extracts the grafts under my supervision.
