Key Takeaways

✓Hair mesotherapy is a series of micro-injections that deliver active ingredients, such as vitamins, amino acids, peptides or hyaluronic acid, into the scalp.
✓It supports hair that is still there. It can reduce shedding and improve hair quality, but it cannot regrow hair where follicles are gone.
✓Most plans start with about 4–6 sessions a few weeks apart, followed by maintenance every few months. Results are judged after about three to six months.
✓The evidence is still early, and results depend on the cocktail. I use mesotherapy as part of a wider plan, not instead of proven medication.
✓After a hair transplant, I usually start mesotherapy about one month after surgery and continue for at least eight months.

Mesotherapy is one of the most requested hair loss treatments in Turkey, and one of the most confusing. Every clinic seems to offer a different cocktail, a different number of sessions and a different promise. Some patients are told it will stop their hair loss for good; others that it will make a transplant unnecessary. Neither is true.

Used honestly, mesotherapy is a useful supportive treatment: it can help weakened hair, reduce shedding and support recovery after a hair transplant. On this page I explain what goes into the injections, who it suits and who should avoid it, how a session works, how many you need, what to expect and when, how it fits with a transplant and with PRP or exosomes, what the research actually shows, and what the risks are. For an overview of all options, see my hair loss treatments guide. If you are considering a transplant of the beard, brows or another area, my hair transplant treatments page compares them.

What Is Hair Mesotherapy?

Hair mesotherapy is a series of very small, shallow injections into the scalp. Each injection delivers a tiny amount of a solution, usually called a cocktail, into the skin around the hair follicles. The idea is to place active ingredients exactly where the follicles are, instead of relying on what reaches the scalp from food, supplements or creams.

The technique was developed in France in the 1950s for other conditions and was later adapted for hair. Today it is used mainly for early pattern hair loss, diffuse shedding and poor hair quality, and as a supportive treatment around hair transplants. In this video my colleague explains how mesotherapy differs from PRP and ozone therapy.

What Is in the Mesotherapy Cocktail?

“Mesotherapy” describes the injection technique, not a single medicine. What is injected matters as much as how it is injected, and this is the main reason research results vary so much. These are the main types:

Vitamin and amino acid cocktailsWhat it containsBiotin and other B vitamins, minerals such as zinc, amino acids, sometimes peptides. What we knowThe most widely used type; small studies show benefits for hair quality and shedding.
Hyaluronic acid basedWhat it containsNon-cross-linked hyaluronic acid, sometimes with glucose or other actives. What we knowA small randomised pilot study in 2026 found a clear density gain with glucose added.
Peptides and growth factorsWhat it containsBiomimetic peptides or growth factors that signal the follicle. What we knowPromising but early; products vary widely.
Drug mesotherapyWhat it containsDutasteride, finasteride or minoxidil injected into the scalp. What we knowDutasteride has the most data, but it is less effective than tablets and has caused hair loss patches in rare cases.

I choose the cocktail for each patient based on the cause of hair loss, the condition of the scalp, and the other treatments they use. Ask any clinic exactly what they will inject, and why.

Who Is Hair Mesotherapy For, and Who Should Avoid It?

Usually a good fit

  • Early pattern hair loss in men and women, as part of a wider plan with medication.
  • Diffuse shedding after illness, stress or childbirth, once the cause has been checked.
  • Thin, weak or brittle hair where follicles are still present.
  • Patients who cannot or do not want to use certain medications.
  • Patients before and after a hair transplant, to support native and transplanted hair.

When I do not recommend it

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Active scalp infection, eczema or psoriasis in the treatment area.
  • Bleeding disorders, or blood thinners that cannot be paused; tell me about every medication.
  • A history of keloid scars or allergy to any ingredient.
  • Scarring alopecias and active alopecia areata, which need dermatological treatment.
  • Bald areas where follicles are gone, which need a transplant, not injections.

Women have additional causes of hair loss to rule out first, which I explain on my female hair transplant page.

How a Mesotherapy Session Works

AssessmentAt the first visit I examine the scalp with a dermatoscope, take standardised photos and choose the cocktail. Blood tests are done when your history suggests them.
PreparationThe scalp is cleaned and disinfected. A numbing cream or cooling can be used for comfort.
InjectionsVery fine needles, or an injector device, place small amounts of the cocktail just under the skin across the thinning areas.
DurationUsually around 20–30 minutes, depending on the area.
AfterwardsSmall red dots and mild tenderness for a few hours. Most patients go back to work the same day.

Aftercare

  • Do not wash your hair for the rest of the day, then wash gently.
  • Avoid hair products, swimming, saunas and heavy exercise for about 24 hours.
  • Do not massage or scratch the injection sites.

How Many Mesotherapy Sessions Do You Need?

Initial courseUsually about 4–6 sessions, two to four weeks apart.
AssessmentPhotos and a scalp examination at around three to six months show whether it is working for you.
MaintenanceIf it helps, a session every three to six months keeps the effect.
After a hair transplantUsually monthly from about one month after surgery, for at least eight months.

The exact plan depends on your hair loss and what else you use. If there is no visible benefit after a full course, I do not continue it for the sake of it.

Hair Mesotherapy Results Timeline

First weeksLittle visible change. Some patients notice less shedding.
Around 2–3 monthsShedding usually slows; hair can feel stronger.
Around 3–6 monthsThe time to judge it, with standardised photos and a scalp examination.
Long termThe effect fades without maintenance, because the underlying cause of hair loss continues.

Mesotherapy improves the hair you have. It does not create new follicles, and it does not stop pattern hair loss permanently.

Mesotherapy and Hair Transplant

Mesotherapy is most useful to me as part of a hair transplant plan:

Before surgeryIt can help stabilise shedding and strengthen weak native hair, which helps planning.
After surgeryI usually start about one month after the transplant, once the scalp has healed, and continue for at least eight months, often combined with PRP.
Long termTogether with medication, it helps protect native hair around the transplanted area.

In this video, Dr. Mehmet Erdoğan and I answer common questions about hair transplants, including when to start PRP and mesotherapy after surgery.

Mesotherapy is not an alternative to a transplant where hair is lost. You can read about surgical options on my hair transplant and techniques pages.

Mesotherapy vs PRP, Exosomes and Minoxidil

MesotherapyWhat it isA cocktail of vitamins, amino acids, peptides or drugs.EvidenceEarly; depends on the cocktail.Typical course4–6 sessions, then maintenance.
PRPWhat it isGrowth factors from your own platelets.EvidenceModerate; many randomised trials.Typical course3–4 sessions, then maintenance.
ExosomesWhat it isCell-free vesicles carrying growth signals.EvidenceEarly; few clinical trials.Typical courseA few sessions, often with PRP.
MinoxidilWhat it isA medication applied daily or taken as tablets.EvidenceStrong.Typical courseDaily, long term.

A simplified guide; plans are adjusted for each patient.

These treatments are not rivals. Minoxidil and other medication address the cause of pattern hair loss every day; PRP and exosomes add growth signals; mesotherapy delivers supportive ingredients to the scalp. Read more on my PRP hair treatment, exosome hair therapy and ozone hair therapy pages.

What the Research Shows About Hair Mesotherapy

Systematic review · 30 studies · 2026Promising, but not yet standardA systematic review in Dermatologic Surgery (Beer and colleagues, 2026) found that injectable therapy may give cosmetic benefit in pattern hair loss, particularly with dutasteride. Studies were small, protocols varied and follow-up was short, and rare adverse events included paradoxical hair loss and scarring. What it means: Mesotherapy is a reasonable supportive option, not a proven routine treatment.
Randomised pilot study · 40 patients · 2026A defined cocktail can workA randomised, evaluator-blinded pilot study in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (Yi and colleagues, 2026) found that intradermal 10% glucose with hyaluronic acid increased terminal hair density by 19.3 hairs per cm², compared with 6.2 with hyaluronic acid alone. What it means: What is injected matters, and well-designed trials are starting to appear.
Network meta-analysis · 33 studies · 2025Injected dutasteride is weaker than tabletsA network meta-analysis in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (Gupta and colleagues, 2025) found dutasteride mesotherapy significantly less effective than oral dutasteride 0.5 mg a day. What it means: Injecting a drug into the scalp does not automatically make it stronger.
Case series · 3 patients · 2026A rare but lasting complicationA case series in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology (Nogueira and Osório, 2026) described three women who developed persistent bald patches after dutasteride mesotherapy; none regrew fully. What it means: Technique, product and follow-up matter, and drug mesotherapy needs careful counselling.
My viewI use mesotherapy, and I see patients benefit from it, especially after a hair transplant and in early thinning. But I am careful about how I present it. It is a supportive treatment with early evidence, and its results depend entirely on what is injected and how. I tell every patient what is in their cocktail, how many sessions I plan, when we will judge it and what we will do if it does not help. And I never offer it instead of medication that is proven to work, or instead of a transplant where hair is already gone.

Side Effects and Rare Complications

CommonPinpoint redness, mild swelling, tenderness and small bruises for a few hours to a few days.
Less commonHeadache, temporary shedding or itching after a session.
RareInfection, allergic reaction or small nodules at injection sites.
Very rarePatches of hair loss or scarring at injection sites, reported mainly with drug mesotherapy such as dutasteride.

Most risks come from non-sterile technique, unknown products or untrained injectors. Never have mesotherapy at home or from someone who cannot tell you exactly what they are injecting.

Hair Mesotherapy Cost

Mesotherapy is priced per session or as a course, and the total depends on the cocktail, the number of sessions and whether it is combined with other treatments. A single low-priced session says little about the cost of a plan that works, so ask for the full course price.

Treatment with a transplantMy Diamond hair transplant package is €5,790 ($6,840 · £4,840) at a fixed price and already includes PRP, exosome treatment, medication and a 3-month hair care kit. For mesotherapy on its own, or after your transplant, I give you a personal plan and price after the consultation. All packages are compared on my hair transplant Turkey packages page. How transplant prices are set is explained on my hair transplant cost in Turkey page, and travel and safety on my hair transplant in Turkey guide.

Five questions to ask before you start

  • What exactly will be injected, and why that cocktail for me?
  • How many sessions, how far apart, and what is the full course price?
  • How and when will we judge whether it is working?
  • Who will do the injections, and how is sterility ensured?
  • Would medication, PRP or a transplant serve me better?

Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Mesotherapy

Does hair mesotherapy really work?

It can reduce shedding and improve hair quality in suitable patients, especially in early hair loss and after a transplant. The evidence is still early and depends on the cocktail, so I use it as a supportive treatment.

How many mesotherapy sessions do I need for hair?

Usually about 4–6 sessions, two to four weeks apart, then maintenance every three to six months if it helps.

When will I see results from hair mesotherapy?

Shedding usually slows within two to three months. The result is best judged after about three to six months.

Is hair mesotherapy painful?

Most patients feel only small pricks. Numbing cream or cooling makes the session comfortable.

Are the results permanent?

No. Mesotherapy supports existing hair, but the underlying cause of hair loss continues, so maintenance sessions are needed.

Can mesotherapy replace a hair transplant?

No. It cannot regrow hair where follicles are lost. It works well alongside a transplant to support native and transplanted hair.

When can I start mesotherapy after a hair transplant?

I usually start about one month after surgery and continue for at least eight months, often with PRP.

Is mesotherapy or PRP better for hair loss?

They work differently. PRP has more research behind it; mesotherapy delivers supportive ingredients. Many patients benefit from combining them.

Is dutasteride mesotherapy safe?

It is used widely, but it is less effective than tablets in studies, and rare cases of lasting hair loss patches at injection sites have been reported. It needs careful counselling and experienced hands.

Can women have hair mesotherapy?

Yes, except during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The cause of hair loss should be checked first.
