Key Takeaways
Almost every patient who contacts me asks two questions in the same breath: “How many grafts do I need?” and “What will that cost?” They are the right questions, but most price lists answer only the second. A cost per graft means very little until you know how many grafts your hair loss really needs, how many hairs those grafts contain and how many your donor area can safely give.
This page works through all three, with a calculator you can use yourself, and then puts real prices next to each graft count in Turkey, the UK and the US. For total package prices, see hair transplant cost in Turkey; for what a package includes, see hair transplant packages.
What Is a Graft, and How Many Hairs Does It Hold?
Hair does not grow from the scalp one strand at a time. It grows in small natural groups called follicular units, each holding one to four hairs. In a hair transplant, each of these units is one graft. When a clinic quotes “3,000 grafts”, it means 3,000 follicular units, not 3,000 hairs.
The average of about 2.2 hairs per graft comes from published FUE series, for example 2.2 in a Korean study of 658 patients and 2.3 in a study of donor-area extraction. Your own number depends on your hair, which is why two patients with the same graft count can end up with visibly different density.
Grafts are not all used the same way. Single-hair grafts go at the very front, to create a soft, natural hairline; two- and three-hair grafts go behind them to build density. So when you compare two quotes, ask whether the number refers to grafts or to hairs. A quote of “7,000 hairs” is roughly a 3,000-graft procedure.
How Many Grafts Do I Need?
The graft number is not a guess and not a package size. It is a simple calculation, which I make for every patient:
Clinical guidelines recommend a minimum of about 35–45 follicular units per cm² for a natural look, as set out in the standard guidelines of care for hair transplantation. A full, never-balding scalp has more than that, but the eye reads around half of the original density as full, which is what makes transplants work. In practice I plant more densely at the hairline and less densely behind it.
Because the bald area grows with each stage of hair loss, the Norwood scale gives a useful first estimate. These are the typical ranges we use at Smile Hair Clinic:
These are starting points. Thick, wavy or curly hair, and low contrast between hair and skin colour, cover more with fewer grafts; fine, straight, dark hair on pale skin needs more. Your age and how fast your hair is still falling also change the plan, because a hairline has to look right in twenty years, not only next summer.

Graft and Donor Calculator
Choose your stage of hair loss and your donor density. The calculator estimates how many grafts you are likely to need, how many your scalp can safely give over a lifetime, what would be left for the future and what those grafts would cost in Turkey, the UK and the US. No contact details are needed.

What these grafts would cost
How it works: graft ranges are the typical ranges for each Norwood stage. Lifetime supply assumes a safe donor zone of about 170–220 cm² at the density you chose, with 25–30% of follicular units extracted over a lifetime; beard and body hair can add more. UK cost uses the average quote of £3.25 per graft; US cost uses a typical $4–$8 per graft. This is an educational estimate, not a medical assessment. Only an examination of your scalp can set your real plan.
Your Donor Area Is a Budget, Not a Bank
Every graft comes from the back and sides of your head, and a follicle that has been taken does not grow back there. So the real limit on any hair transplant is not price; it is how many grafts your donor area can give without looking thin.
In a study of 580 men, the average donor density was about 78 follicular units per cm², and the authors used extraction of around 25% as the safe limit. Taking much more than that leaves a see-through, patchy back of the head, the overharvested look that is very hard to repair. A larger safe zone and higher density give more grafts; a smaller or thinner donor area gives fewer.
This matters most in advanced hair loss. In a series of 820 men with Norwood 5–7 baldness, 94% were satisfied at 12 months, yet 62% wanted another session to add coverage or density. A second session is only possible if the first one left something in the budget. When the scalp alone is not enough, beard and body hair can add grafts, mainly for density behind the hairline.
Hair Transplant Cost by Number of Grafts: Turkey, UK and US
This is what the same number of grafts typically costs in each country in 2026. Turkish figures are graft-based quotes for team-led procedures; UK and US figures are for the procedure alone, without the hotel, transfers or medication that a Turkish package includes.
Turkey: typical graft-based market quotes from Smile Hair Clinic’s 2026 market overview. UK: the average of £3.25 per graft from a survey of 58 UK clinics; many UK clinics give volume discounts on large sessions, so real quotes for 4,000–5,000 grafts are often lower. US: the typical $4–$8 per graft cited in a 2026 Turkey–US price comparison. Converted at about €1 = $1.18 and £1 = €1.20.
What 3,000 grafts look like
3,000 grafts is the most common request I see. It usually restores the hairline, temples and front of the scalp in Norwood 3–4 hair loss, covering about 60–75 cm² at a natural density. In this video I go through three 3,000-graft cases and their results.

What 5,000 grafts look like
5,000 grafts covers most of the top of the head in Norwood 5–6 hair loss, but it is also close to what many donor areas can give over a lifetime. It should only be planned after the donor area has been measured. Here I review a 5,000-graft result at nine months.

Per-Graft Price vs Fixed Package: What You Really Pay per Graft
In Turkey, the graft number rarely changes the price. In my experience, around 90% of clinics here sell all-inclusive packages with one fixed price, and only one or two still calculate the cost by the number of grafts. A fixed price still has a cost per graft; it simply depends on how many grafts your plan needs. This is what my €5,790 package works out at:
Diamond package, performed by me: €5,790 ($6,840 · £4,840) including hotel, transfers, PRP, exosome therapy and 12 months of follow-up.
Even at 2,000 grafts, a surgeon-performed procedure in Istanbul costs less per graft than the UK average of £3.25, and well under the typical US rate, before you count the hotel and transfers that are included.
How to Spot an Inflated Graft Count
Graft numbers are easy to market and hard for a patient to check. These are the warning signs I see most often in quotes that patients bring to me:
The ISHRS describes overharvested donor areas as one of the most common problems it sees in failed procedures from unlicensed “black market” clinics. If a quote rests on a large graft number, ask how it was calculated and what it leaves for the future. More on choosing a clinic safely is on my hair transplant in Turkey page, and the techniques used to extract and place grafts are compared on the techniques page.
Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Transplant Cost per Graft
How much does a hair transplant cost per graft in Turkey?
Most Turkish clinics charge a fixed package price, so the cost per graft depends on how many you need. Graft-based quotes for team-led procedures work out at roughly €0.85–€2.10 ($1.00–$2.50) per graft. My surgeon-performed package of €5,790 works out at about €1.93 per graft for 3,000 grafts and €1.16 for 5,000.
How much do 5,000 grafts cost in Turkey?
Graft-based quotes for 5,000 grafts in Turkey are typically €3,400–€4,250 ($4,000–$5,000). At clinics with fixed packages, including mine, 5,000 grafts cost the same as any other number your plan needs. In the UK the same graft count would cost around £16,250 (€19,440) at the average rate, and in the US $20,000–$40,000 (€16,950–€33,900).
How much do 3,000 grafts cost in Turkey?
Typical graft-based quotes for 3,000 grafts are €2,300–€3,400 ($2,700–$4,000). The same procedure costs about £9,750 (€11,660) in the UK at the average rate, and $12,000–$24,000 (€10,170–€20,340) in the US.
How many hairs are in 3,000 grafts?
About 6,600, at the published average of around 2.2 hairs per graft. Depending on your hair, the real number can range from roughly 5,500 to 7,500.
How many grafts do I need for a full head?
Covering the whole top of the head in Norwood 6–7 hair loss typically needs 4,000–6,000 grafts or more. That is close to, or beyond, what many donor areas can give, so full coverage is usually planned in two sessions, sometimes with beard or body hair, and with the front given priority.
How much area do 3,000 grafts cover?
At a natural density of 40–50 grafts per cm², 3,000 grafts cover roughly 60–75 cm², which is about the hairline, temples and front of the scalp.
Does the price per graft go down with more grafts?
With a fixed package, yes: the same price divided by more grafts. Many UK and US clinics also lower their per-graft rate for large sessions. But a lower price per graft is only good value if you actually need that many grafts.
Can I have 6,000 grafts in one session?
Some clinics advertise it, but very few donor areas can give 6,000 grafts without being overharvested, and very long sessions keep grafts outside the body for longer. When that much coverage is needed, I usually recommend two sessions about a year apart.
