Key Takeaways
Most of my British patients arrive with two quotes: one from a clinic in London, Manchester or Birmingham, and one from Istanbul. The difference is large, and so are the warnings. UK clinics publish articles about botched surgery in Turkey; friends come back from Istanbul delighted. Both sides are describing something real.
As a hair transplant surgeon who operates on British patients in Istanbul, I see both sides of this decision closely: the plans patients bring from UK clinics and the results they achieve here. On this page I compare the UK and Turkey on cost, the real total cost of the trip, who performs the surgery, regulation in both countries, how to check a clinic, the NHS and insurance, travel, and aftercare when you are home. I also answer the arguments UK clinics make, and explain when I tell British patients to stay at home. For the full guide to surgery here, see my hair transplant in Turkey page; if you are comparing with America, read hair transplant Turkey vs USA.
Hair Transplant UK vs Turkey at a Glance
UK figures are typical 2026 market ranges. Euro prices converted at €1 = £0.84 and rounded.
Hair Transplant Cost: UK vs Turkey
In the UK, hair transplants are usually priced per graft or per session. A survey of 58 UK clinics found an average quote of £4,820 (€5,760) for 1,500 grafts, about £3.25 (€3.90) per graft, and quotes for the same patient ranged from £1,995 to £15,000 (€2,390–€17,940). A full FUE session typically costs £3,000–£10,000 (€3,590–€11,960). Consultations, prescriptions and PRP, at around £150–£600 (€180–€720) a session, are often charged separately.
In Turkey, most clinics sell all-inclusive packages of about £1,680–£4,200 (€2,000–€5,000) with hotel and transfers. My Diamond package is a fixed £4,840 (€5,790), whatever the number of grafts and whatever technique your hair needs. This is how that compares:
UK figures calculated at the survey average of £3.25 per graft. Many UK clinics discount large sessions, so real quotes for 3,500 grafts or more are often lower.
The table shows the honest picture. At about 1,500 grafts, a UK clinic at the average rate costs about the same as my package before you add flights, and less once you do. From around 2,000 grafts, the difference grows quickly. You can see how graft numbers are planned on my graft cost page and current Turkish prices on my hair transplant cost in Turkey page.
Why is a hair transplant cheaper in Turkey?
Lower salaries, rents and operating costs, a favourable exchange rate and intense competition between clinics. The operation itself is the same. What should make you cautious is not a Turkish price below a UK price, but a Turkish price far below other reputable Turkish clinics. That usually means something has been removed, most often the surgeon’s own time. Smile Hair Clinic also offers lower-priced packages from £2,000 (€2,390), planned by other doctors on the team; all are compared on my hair transplant Turkey packages page.
The Real Total Cost of a Hair Transplant Trip from the UK
UK clinics are right to say that the Turkish price is not the whole cost. This is a realistic budget for a trip to Istanbul with me:
What no budget includes is a revision. Ask every clinic, in the UK and in Turkey, in writing: what happens if the result is not what was planned, and what does it cost?
Who Performs Your Surgery: The Question That Matters Most
The strongest argument UK clinics make against Turkey is that technicians do the surgery while the doctor hardly appears. In some Istanbul clinics that is true. But it is a clinic problem, not a country problem: in the UK, too, technicians often extract and place grafts. Ask any clinic, in either country, who does what:
In December 2023, the British Association of Hair Restoration Surgery (BAHRS), BAAPS, BAPRAS and the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons published joint minimum guidelines for UK patients considering a hair transplant in Turkey. They advise meeting the operating surgeon before booking, taking at least two weeks before paying, and being told whether a doctor or a technician makes the incisions. I agree with all three. In this seminar for British patients, I talk about how I plan and perform each operation.

Regulation in the UK and Turkey
Both countries regulate hair transplants, in different ways. Neither system guarantees a good result; both give you things to check.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) points British travellers to HealthTürkiye for approved providers, and does not endorse any clinic. I explain how I meet these rules on my hair transplant in Turkey page.
How to Check a Clinic from the UK
The international society of hair restoration surgeons, ISHRS, runs a campaign called “Fight the FIGHT” against fraudulent, illicit and global hair transplants. In its 2025 Practice Census, 59.4% of member surgeons worldwide said black-market clinics operate in their own city. Istanbul has more clinics of both kinds than anywhere, so verification matters:
- Know your surgeon’s name, specialty and medical school before you book, and speak to them, not only to a coordinator.
- Check the clinic is a licensed health institution with a hair transplant unit and a health tourism authorisation, and look for it on HealthTürkiye.
- Ask who opens the channels, who extracts and who places the grafts, and get the answer in writing.
- Ask for healed 12-month results from the same surgeon.
- Get the full price, follow-up plan and revision policy in writing, and take two weeks before paying.
- Be wary of graft numbers promised before anyone has seen your donor area, very large sessions sold as a selling point, and prices far below other reputable clinics.
The techniques themselves are the same in both countries: FUE with sapphire blades or DHI implanters in most Turkish clinics, and FUE or strip surgery (FUT) in the UK. My hair transplant techniques page compares every method, my hair transplant treatments page covers beard, eyebrow, female and Afro procedures, and my hair transplant guide explains candidacy, recovery and risks.
If you pay by credit card, Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act can apply to purchases between £100 and £30,000, including payments abroad. It does not apply to debit cards or bank transfers. Check the details with your card provider.
NHS, Insurance and If Something Goes Wrong
These risks are real, and they apply to any surgery abroad. A hair transplant under local anaesthesia is a much smaller operation than the abdominal and breast surgery that makes up most of the complications reported to UK plastic surgeons, but the lesson is the same: choose the clinic carefully and plan for problems before you travel.
Travelling from the UK for a Hair Transplant
Do British citizens need a visa for Turkey?
No. British citizens can visit Turkey without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. According to FCDO entry advice, your passport should be valid for at least 150 days from the date you arrive and have a blank page. Rules can change, so check the FCDO page before booking.
How long is the flight?
Turkish Airlines and Pegasus fly nonstop from several UK airports. Schedules change; check before booking.
A typical four-day trip
Flying home after surgery
A four-hour flight is far easier on recovery than a long-haul trip, but it still needs care. Drink water, move your legs, avoid alcohol, use a U-shaped pillow so your head does not rest on the donor area, and wear a loose cap. If you have ever had a blood clot, tell me before you book.
Aftercare When You Are Back in the UK
This is what UK clinics worry about most, and they are right that it must be planned. This is how follow-up works with my team:
Tell your GP before you travel that you are having a procedure abroad, and take your operation notes to any appointment. Most patients never need it. The full daily routine is in my patient guide.
What UK Clinics Say About Turkey, and My Answer
In this short video I explain why price alone is the wrong reason to choose Turkey.
Video: Dr. Gökay Bilgin on choosing a clinic in Turkey.
When Staying in the UK Makes More Sense
I turn patients away, and I tell some British patients that a UK clinic is the better choice:
- A small session of around 1,000–1,500 grafts, where a UK price is similar once travel is included.
- A history of blood clots, or a condition that makes flying or travel risky.
- Uncontrolled diabetes, blood pressure or heart disease, or blood thinners that cannot safely be paused.
- If you need, or strongly prefer, in-person follow-up close to home.
- Hair loss that has only just started, where medical treatment should come first.
In these cases I would rather you have a good procedure at home than a risky trip to Istanbul.
What the Research Shows
My View: The UK or Turkey?
Frequently Asked Questions: Hair Transplant UK vs Turkey
Is it better to get a hair transplant in the UK or Turkey?
It depends on the surgeon more than the country. A doctor-led clinic in Istanbul usually offers more experience for the money, including hotel and follow-up. A UK clinic offers in-person aftercare and UK legal protection.
How much is a hair transplant in the UK vs Turkey?
In the UK, about £3.25 per graft on average, or £3,000–£10,000 for a full FUE session. In Turkey, packages typically cost £1,680–£4,200 (€2,000–€5,000); my Diamond package is a fixed £4,840 (€5,790), all-inclusive.
How much does the whole trip from the UK cost?
With my Diamond package, flights and extras, typically about £5,060–£5,420 (€6,020–€6,450) in total.
Is it safe to have a hair transplant in Turkey?
It can be very safe in a licensed clinic where you know your surgeon and the doctor performs the critical steps. Black-market clinics exist, so verify the clinic, the surgeon and the HealthTürkiye listing before you book.
Do I need a visa to travel from the UK to Turkey?
No. British citizens can visit for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. Your passport should be valid for at least 150 days from arrival.
How long do I need to stay in Turkey?
Most patients stay four days and three nights: arrival, operation, check-up and first wash before flying home.
How long is the flight from the UK to Istanbul?
About 4 hours from London, Birmingham and Manchester, and about 4–4.5 hours from Edinburgh.
Will the NHS fix a hair transplant done abroad?
Hair transplants are not available on the NHS, including revisions. For urgent problems such as an infection, contact your GP or NHS 111.
Does my GHIC or travel insurance cover a hair transplant in Turkey?
No. A GHIC is not valid in Turkey, and standard travel insurance does not normally cover elective surgery abroad. Ask your clinic about its complication insurance.
Can I pay so that I am protected?
Credit card payments between £100 and £30,000 may be covered by Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, including abroad. Debit cards and bank transfers are not. Check with your card provider.
Are the results in Turkey as good as in the UK?
They can be, and with an experienced surgeon often are. Results depend on the surgeon, the design and the care taken with grafts, not on the country.
Who performs the surgery at your clinic?
I do the consultation, design the hairline, open the channels and place every graft myself. My trained team extracts the grafts under my supervision.
